A guide to the best summer ever

A guide to the best summer ever

Summer is right around the corner and what is better than packing your summer with fun filled activities?!  Instead of just sitting at home wishing for an awesome summer I am here to give you a list of the most fun activities that will keep you from ever being bored this summer.  Whether you just want to relax or be more adventurous this list will ensure that your summer is perfect.

  1. Go to a country concert:  From Kenny Chesney to Carrie Underwood to Florida Georgia Line, any country concert is a blast in the summer.
  2. Go on vacation: Sometimes we all just need to get away, pamper yourself with a week by the ocean and come home feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever life hands you!
  3. See a movie at the Drive-In: Pick a warm summer night and pack some of your best friends in the car for a relaxing movie night.
  4. Have a cookout: Throw some chicken on the grill and make some of your favorite side dishes for a fun filled night of eating and laughing with friends.
  5. Go to a MLB game: Whether you are a baseball fan or not, these games are fun for anyone and make for great memories!
  6. Go see a must see movie of the summer: It’s always fun to have a night out at the movies and see for yourself that one movie that everyone has been raving about.
  7. Have a bonfire: What is better than marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers?? Nothing!!
  8. Dive into a new book: Lay by the pool and read something worth while!

The season is only a few months long though, so it’s best to start crossing off the items on your summer bucket list sooner than later.

Cereal for snacking

Cereal for snacking

Sometimes you just need that mid day pick-me-up or maybe midnight snack and a bowl of cereal comes to mind.  The perfect amount of crunch paired with cold milk, really hits the spot!  However what some people don’t realize is that cereal has more sugar than three Chips Ahoy cookies in just one cup. And sugar’s not the only problem— seemingly healthy options like raisin bran add nearly 15 percent of the daily value of sodium before it’s even lunchtime.  So while some people think they are enjoying a light healthy snack they are filling their body with copious amounts of sugar and sodium.

Do not allow your spirits to be crushed because cereal can still be consumed in a healthy manner and I am here to give you a list of healthy cereal that you can eat and not feel guilty.  Cheerios is a low-calorie choice with 100 calories per cup. This cereal tops the healthiest cereal list because of its low sugar content at just 1g. The Children’s Hospital of Boston has selected Cheerios as a healthiest cereal pick.  Eating whole-grain cereal has been associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes and better overall health in some studies.  Below is a list of healthy cereals that you should choose when strolling through the cereal isle at your local grocery store:

  • General Mills Cheerios
  • Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs
  • General Mills Total Whole Grain
  • General Mills Fiber One
  • Kellogg’s Special K Protein Plus
  • General Mills Kix
  • Kellogg’s All Bran
  • Quaker Oats-Quick Oats

Another trick for cutting out calories when eating cereal is to substitute regular milk for almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, or soy milk.  By choosing the right brand and substituting regular milk for a healthier option, your cereal snack is all of a sudden guilt free!

Should we really trust Instagram Ads?

Should we really trust Instagram Ads?

Instagram. It’s something our generation cannot live without.  We live in a society where the amount of followers you have and the amount of likes you receive define you, or so you think they do.  The best part about Instagram is the fact that we can follow our favorite celebrities and keep up with their day to day lives.  Sometimes I feel like I personally know a celebrity just because I see what they are up to every day by looking at their posts on Instagram.  With that being said, businesses are taking full advantage of the fact that us regular people obsess over everything and anything having to do with a celebrity.  That’s where Instagram ads and sponsored Instagram posts came along.    When we see a Kardashian post about their favorite hair product, or a fitness guru post about their go to protein shake, we believe them and get lured into buying these products.  However, have you ever taken the time to really think about if these celebrities even use the products they promote?? All this time we’re thinking we we’re going to grow hair like a Kardashian and be as fit as a fitness guide just by using the same products as them.  In reality, it is highly doubtful our favorite celebrity just decided to tell the world about their favorite products.  Most likely they are getting paid a large sum of money to promote a brand which will in turn bring in revenue from celebrity obsessed people like us.  One of the biggest indicators was when Scott Disick, a Keeping up With the Kardashians cast member, accidentally posted a picture with the directions of when to post and what to say.

These Instagram ads may seem to be real, however most likely the celebrity got sent the product along with a caption to post with it and in return gets paid the big bucks just for something as simple as an Instagram post.

Have you ever heard of a rainbow bagel?

Have you ever heard of a rainbow bagel?

This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel with my team (The Louisville Ladybirds) to New York.  We would be representing our basketball team and performing at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.  After a long 13 hour bus ride we finally arrived, eager to cheer on our team in the ACC tournament.  Little did we know, our trip would not be what we expected.  As we endured screaming fans, we took the floor and nailed our performance.  On the other hand, our basketball team didn’t quite nail theirs.  We lost the game against Duke 81-77.  After spending some time sulking about the loss, we realized that we had a whole day to explore the city of New York since we would no longer be playing in the tournament the following day.  After doing a little research we found some pretty cool things to do, that would be very Instagram worthy as well.

Our first stop was The Bagel Store, in Brooklyn.  This is not just any bagel shop, we went there because they sell rainbow bagels!  This was not like anything I had ever seen before.  The bagels are literally rainbow swirled and the cream cheese flavors ranged from oreo, to funfetti, to cotton candy, to jalepeño, and so much more! My order of choice was a rainbow bagel with funfetti cream cheese.  It tasted just as good as it looked and the best part about it was that it was like I was eating cake for breakfast!

After a long day of traveling on the subway and shopping in the city, we worked up our appetites once again.  We started our day with a sweet treat so we figured we might as well end it with one too!! We sought out the address for Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer and headed that way.  After waiting in a 30 minute line just to get into the building we saw what all of the hype was about.  Gourmet milkshakes unlike ever before.  These milkshakes seemed to be designed for Instagram because they were crazy and impractical!  The monstrous shakes are served with a coat of frosting around the outside and piles of candy, cookies, pretzels, whipped cream and even pop tarts added for decoration!  I’m not going to lie, I felt pretty guilty after indulging in this treat however the pictures were so worth it.

After traveling to New York with intentions of dancing to represent our basketball team each day, we ended up spending most our time consuming more calories than we even thought was possible.  Experiencing New York was a blast and I would definitely recommend trying these crazy foods if you ever find yourself there!

Tornado Warning!

Tornado Warning!

As I sat in the sunny 70 degree weather at the Louisville Vs. Eastern Michigan baseball game yesterday I thought back to just a few days before when I had been scared for my life during a tornado warning.  I woke up in the middle of the night to howling wind, loud thunder, lightening thrashes, and pounding rain.  All I could think about was what I needed to do to stay safe, however I wasn’t sure what I needed to do.  That is why I have compiled a list for the necessary steps to stay safe from a tornado incase a warning like that ever passes through Louisville again.

However first comes first, what actually is a tornado??  According to The National Severe Storms Laboratory, a tornado “is a narrow, violently rotating column of air that extends from the base of a thunderstorm to the ground.”  Tornadoes, however, are naturally invisible, since they’re made up of air. The reason we are able to see a tornado is due to the fact that the vortex is made up of water droplets, dust, and debris.

Now that you know what is coming for you the next time you hear a tornado warning for your area, here are the steps you need to take:

  1. Go to a windowless interior room on lowest level of your house. Go to a storm cellar or basement if your house has one. If there is no basement, go to an inner hallway or a smaller inner room without windows, such as a bathroom or closet.
  2. Get away from the windows.
  3. Go to the center of the room. Stay away from corners because they tend to attract debris.
  4. Get under a piece of sturdy furniture such as a workbench or heavy table or desk and hold on to it.
  5. Use your arms to protect head and neck.
Five things I learned from being a kid

Five things I learned from being a kid

  1. Christmas is THE BEST THING EVER

Not being able to sleep on Christmas Eve and swearing you heard Rudolph’s hooves on the roof was a yearly thing.  Of course waking up to dozens of presents under the tree never gets old.  Something I will never grow out of is the Christmas spirit.

  1. Nothing lasts forever

Christmas didn’t last forever and neither did play time outside.  It always seemed like the end of the world when your parents told you that play time was over or that it was bed time.  However I have definitely come to learn that it’s a good thing nothing lasts forever.  It makes you realize that the bad times will eventually go away and it definitely has made me appreciate the good times a lot more.

  1. The best way to deal with life is to DEAL with it.

A lot of the time, life isn’t fair.  But at some point in your life you have to realize that crying about it to your mom might help your feelings but it won’t change the unchangeable.  I have learned that sometimes you have to just deal with the bad by having a positive attitude and keep on keeping on.

  1. Parents know everything

From helping with math homework in elementary school to teaching us how to do laundry to giving relationship advice…no matter how much we try to deny it and prove them wrong, they will always be right.  The best part about this is our parent’s will always be our parents and we will always be their kids and they will always know what’s best for us.

  1. Treat others the way you want to be treated

This is the “golden-rule” in grade school and in life.  I have found that kindness, forgiveness, and an all around positive attitude will get you a lot farther than being rude and selfish.

Workout Clothes as Fashion Statements

Workout Clothes as Fashion Statements

Next time you’re out and about, take the time to notice how many people (particularly women) are dressed in workout gear.  After observing most likely a very large number of women running errands in workout gear, you may wonder how many of those women ACTUALLY came form the gym or are ACTUALLY going to the gym afterwards.  Within the past few years it seems as though workout clothes have become a fashion trend.  The CEO of Nike, Mark Parker, made a statement at the Women’s Innovation summit in New York City, proclaiming, “Leggings are the new denim.”  It seems as though wearing high-end sports clothes has become a new status symbol.

The best part about this trend is that it’s super hip to look like you’re moments away from a workout except you don’t actually have to raise your heart rate at all.  Designers such as Alexander Wang support this trend, with his athletic-inspired line for H&M last year (at the time he said, ‘I live in gym clothes. When you go out on the street, it’s the uniform now.’ He added: ‘I am not an athlete’).  Fashion companies with no links to sportswear are following suit, such as US designer Kate Spade, most famous for her bags and watches, who announced a new turn into athletic wear.

You may be reading this and think that our society has gone absolutely haywire.  However, coming from someone who enjoys going to the mall in cute athletic wear, it’s easy and comfy and you should definitely give this trend a try.  Brands like Lulu Lemon and Adidas have become immensely popular because of this trend.  Celebrities are seen nonstop sporting these athletic brands.  If this blog post has taught you anything hopefully it’s throw out your stilettos and mini skirts out and go get yourself a pair of Nike shoes and Lulu Lemon leggings.
